Kathmandu Plans Multi-Storey Parking at NAC Building to Ease New Road Congestion

Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has requested permission from the federal government to develop the Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) building in New Road into a multi-storey parking facility, as part of efforts to tackle the capital’s worsening parking problem. Speaking at the 34th anniversary celebration of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Police Force on Sunday, Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol said the metropolis has made a special request to the federal government to allow the NAC building to be developed as a multi-level parking facility. According to Dangol, utilizing the existing NAC building for multi-storey parking could significantly help address parking challenges, particularly in Kathmandu’s core areas where available space is limited. She emphasized that the city cannot create additional land and therefore must make better use of existing spaces to manage the growing demand for parking. KMC is also conducting a citywide study on parking management with the involvement of experts. Dangol said the study report is expected soon, and the municipality will formulate a more systematic and structured parking management plan based on the recommendations. She stressed that the growing parking problem requires immediate and organized action, with the optimal use of available space being a key part of the city’s strategy.
