Egg Prices Rise Again as Bird Flu Cuts Production
Egg prices in Nepal have increased after bird flu significantly reduced production, while rising consumer demand has tightened supply. However, poultry farmers say current prices still remain below their production costs.
Egg prices in Nepal have started rising again as bird flu continues to reduce production while market demand strengthens. The Nepal Layers Poultry Farmers Association has revised farm-gate prices effective today, increasing the price of large eggs by Rs 50 per crate (30 eggs) from Rs 450 to Rs 500. Medium eggs have also risen from Rs 420 to Rs 470 per crate, while small eggs are now priced at Rs 415 per crate. According to the Association's President, Binod Pokharel, daily egg production has dropped from around 4.5 million eggs to approximately 2.8 million due to the bird flu outbreak. Although the recent increase reflects improving demand, farmers are still selling below their production cost, which currently stands at Rs 573.60 per crate, or about Rs 19.12 per egg. Pokharel said farmers hope prices will soon reach cost-recovery levels and urged the government to provide relief to poultry producers affected by the bird flu outbreak.
