NID Shift: From Home Ministry Back to Prime Minister’s Office
Prime Minister Balendra Shah has moved the National Investigation Department under the PMO's direct control, reversing its previous Home Ministry affiliation.
In a significant move toward administrative centralization, Prime Minister Balendra Shah has officially transferred the National Investigation Department (NID) back to the direct oversight of the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers (OPMCM). The transition was formalized through an amendment to the Nepal Government (Work Division) Regulations, removing the intelligence agency from the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Home Affairs. The restructuring echoes a similar 2018 policy implemented during the KP Sharma Oli administration, which aimed at streamlining national intelligence under executive control. Alongside this shift, the government has signaled a broader ministerial overhaul, including initial proceedings to dissolve the Revenue Investigation Department. These changes have reignited the national debate regarding the concentration of intelligence and financial oversight within the Prime Minister’s office.
