Nepal Telecom Expands Rural 4G Network Footprint
Nepal Telecom (NT) has expanded high-speed 4G mobile broadband to remote, high-altitude settlements across Dolpa, Taplejung, and Sankhuwasabha, prioritizing digital inclusivity over commercial profitability under the government's FY 2083/84 policy.
In a significant push to bridge the country's digital divide, state-owned Nepal Telecom (NT) has successfully expanded high-speed 4G services to some of the country's most geographically isolated and sparsely populated mountainous regions. Guided by the upcoming FY 2083/84 government policy targeting absolute digital access, the telecom operator has mobilized specialized infrastructure—including helicopter-transported equipment, solar-powered hubs, and satellite networks—to connect far-flung communities. Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Dr. Vikram Timilsina, has directed the ministry and NT to prioritize rural digital access. Concurrently, the ministry has opened the 3300–3700 MHz spectrum band to pave the way for parallel 5G rollouts, even as 4G expansion approaches full national coverage.
