Nepal Exports 22,102 MWh of Electricity as Domestic Supply Surpasses Demand

Nepal has maintained a surplus in electricity production during the monsoon season, enabling the country to export 22,102 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity while meeting its entire domestic demand through local generation. According to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), the country's total daily electricity demand has reached 73,629 MWh, with the evening peak load climbing to 3,248 MW. The authority confirmed that Nepal is currently not importing electricity from India, as increased hydropower generation during the rainy season has ensured adequate domestic supply. Private hydropower producers remain the largest contributors to the national grid, supplying 47,563 MWh of electricity, followed by 17,108 MWh generated by NEA subsidiary companies and 8,959 MWh from projects directly operated by the NEA. Despite continuous rainfall across several parts of the country, the NEA said electricity supply has remained uninterrupted nationwide. To ensure reliable service, the authority has deployed technical maintenance teams on 24-hour standby at all seven provincial offices and in Kathmandu, allowing for immediate response to any technical faults or power disruptions.
