Tim Cook Retires as CEO: Hardware Chief John Ternus to Lead Apple into New Decade

Apple Inc. has announced a historic leadership transition, with Tim Cook stepping down as CEO effective September 1, 2026. Cook, who took the helm in 2011 following Steve Jobs, will remain with the tech giant as Executive Chairman of the board. During his nearly 15-year tenure, Cook transformed Apple into a $4 trillion powerhouse, overseeing the launch of iconic products like the Apple Watch and AirPods while expanding the company’s services ecosystem.

Succeeding him is John Ternus, Apple's current Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering. Ternus, a 25-year veteran of the company, has been a key figure in the development of the iPhone, iPad, and the transition to Apple Silicon. As part of this planned succession, Cook will spend the summer working closely with Ternus to ensure a seamless handover. In his new role, Cook will focus on strategic governance and global policy engagement, while Ternus takes responsibility for steering Apple’s next era of innovation.
