Cyclone ‘Arnab’ Raises Flood Risks Across Major River Basins in Nepal
Nepal’s Flood Forecasting Division has warned of rising river levels and possible flash floods and inundation until November 1 due to the impact of Cyclone ‘Arnab’, urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert.
The potential impact of Cyclone ‘Arnab’ is expected to bring significant rainfall to several river basins across Nepal through November 1, increasing river levels and raising the risk of flooding in vulnerable areas. The Flood Forecasting Division has issued an early warning, urging people living near rivers and streams to take precautions. According to the division, the Narayani, Bagmati, Kamala, Kankai, and Koshi river basins, along with their tributaries, are likely to experience the greatest impact. Heavy rainfall could increase river flows, trigger flash floods in the hilly and Chure regions, and cause inundation in parts of the Terai. The division said the likelihood of major rivers exceeding their warning levels remains low based on current assessments. However, the risk could change depending on actual rainfall and river conditions, making precautionary measures essential. River levels are expected to begin rising gradually from Thursday in the Narayani, Koshi, Bagmati, Kamala, and Kankai basins. On Friday, moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast across these basins and their tributaries, potentially causing a significant rise in water levels. The Mahakali, Karnali, West Rapti, and Babai rivers are also expected to experience moderate increases. According to the forecast, major rivers could reach their highest levels on Saturday, although the probability of crossing warning thresholds remains low. On Sunday, November 1, light rainfall is expected in some areas of the Koshi, Bagmati, and Narayani basins, after which flood risks are forecast to gradually decline. The division has also highlighted the risk of snowfall and avalanches in the higher Himalayan areas of the Koshi and Narayani basins. Flash floods may occur in hilly and Chure areas of the Narayani, Bagmati, Kamala, Kankai, and Koshi basins on Thursday and Friday, while some Terai areas could face inundation. Residents near smaller rivers and streams in the hills and Chure regions have been advised to exercise particular caution from October 29 to 31, as these areas face a moderate risk of sudden increases in water flow. People living, traveling, or working in vulnerable locations have been urged to monitor weather updates and avoid unnecessary risks near rivers and streams.
